Looking for a little extra help in grammar? Want to work on your college admissions essays with a professional? Think you need some additional practice with writing timed essays? Our Supplemental Seminars are exactly what you are looking for! These classes are offered to students in all school settings looking for additional support in a specific area. These classes would not meet the requirements in most states as a full English credit, but could be used as a portion of an elective or part of a larger year-long program.

Classes are offered multiple times a year. The dates are as follows:

All assignments are WEEKLY and are due by Friday at midnight, EST. Some classes have a weekly online chat session with a scheduled meeting time, while others have individual asynchronous conferences with a professional.


College Admissions Essay Workshop

Eligible students: Students in grades 10-12. Public and homeschool students welcome.
Prerequisite: None
Chat session time: None (Asynchronous conferences), Wednesday and Friday deadlines
Cost: $150
Class size limit: 15 students

This class is intended to help students applying to college produce a high quality essay for scholarships and college admissions. The focus of the class will be the Common Application essay prompt, but students who would like to work on different prompts are welcome to do workshop those instead. The class will cover what admissions officers are looking for, how to strengthen your voice and highlight your achievements, and tightening writing to meet the word limit requirements. Students will be expected to interact asynchronously with each other, and there will be deadlines on WEDNESDAY and FRIDAY at midnight, EST every week. Students will emerge from this class with a completed essay for college applications. This class can be taken multiple times if a student would like to workshop more than one essay.

Grammar: Building Blocks

Eligible students: Students in grades 6-10. Public and homeschool students welcome.
Prerequisite: None
Chat session time: Wednesdays at 11am-12pm EST

This class is intended as an introduction or refresher course in the basics of grammar. The weekly topics include: parts of speech, clauses & phrases, building a sentence, and paragraph structure. Note: All sessions contain the same materials and are not progressive. Assignments will be weekly, due each Friday at midnight, EST and a weekly hour-long chat will be required at the time listed. Grammar: Punctuation

Eligible students: Students in grades 6-12. Public and homeschool students welcome.

This class is a helpful one to get a handle on all types of punctuation! The weekly topics include: commas, semicolons, apostrophes, in-text citations, and dialogue punctuation. Successful Standardized Essays

This class is intended for students who would like to improve their expository writing skills, particularly in writing a strong thesis and organizing a well-developed nonfiction essay. Students will get practice in thesis writing, developing strong outlines, and creating full length essays. Assignments will be weekly, due each Friday at midnight, EST. Note: All sessions contain the same materials and are not progressive.

Creative Writing Strategies Session A

Eligible students: Students in grades 6-12. Public and homeschool students welcome.
Prerequisite: None

This class is intended for students who would like to improve their creative writing skills. Students will get practice in several shorter writing activities and generate some ideas, then write some short fiction pieces. Assignments will be weekly, due each Friday at midnight, EST.

This class is helps students further improve their creative writing skills. Students will complete additional writing activities and then create a fully formed short story. Assignments will be weekly, due each Friday at midnight, EST.

Poetry Workshop

Eligible students: Students in grades 6-12. Public and homeschool students welcome.

This class is intended for students who would like to learn and practice writing poetry. Each week, students will learn about a type of poetry and write their own in that style. Students will need to be committed to conference weekly on their peers’ work. They will also receive feedback from the instructor. By the end of the course, students will have a collection of 10-25 poems. These would be ready to submit to fall contests, including Scholastic, if the student desired. Assignments will be weekly, due each Friday at midnight, EST.
