Summer Institute Classes 2017

The Summer Institute is looking to increase the classes available. If you have an idea or desire for a class, please click here and fill out the survey. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Summer Institute classes are offered to students in all school settings looking to hone their writing skills. They are for the creative writer looking for additional outlets, or for the struggling writer hoping to increase writing proficiency. These classes would not meet the requirements in most states as a full English credit, but could be used as a portion of an elective or part of a larger year-long program.

This class is intended for students who would like to submit a writing portfolio to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards contest. The writing portfolio is an opportunity for students to show off the voice and creativity they have developed throughout their high school career. Winners receive monetary awards. The portfolio needs to include 3-8 works of fiction or nonfiction, a table of contents, and a writer’s statement. This writer’s statement is key for gaining recognition for the portfolio in the contest—it explains to the judges who you are and what is most important to you. Students will work directly with the instructor to select and revise the works for the portfolio as well as draft and revise the writer’s statement. One or two additional works could be created in the workshop as well, if necessary. The instructor will contact the student upon registration to create an individualized plan for the course. Assignments will be weekly, due each Friday at midnight, EST.
